To be honest, I wish English followed stricter phonetic rules. This would make it easier for students with learning to write and speak. However, I do know that there is a long history to the English language that needs to be taken into account. Writing can be a time consuming activity, so I know why teachers will sometimes avoid doing too much writing in their lessons, especially with adult learners who are more interested in learning to speak English. However, I agree that writing is equally important and is another mode for developing a deeper understanding of English.
