Unit 1 discussed the relationship between learners and teachers. In particular, it talked about what makes good learners and how learners’ behavior, motivation, and progress may differ based on English level, age, and other characteristics. It also discussed what makes good teachers and the different roles teachers employ depending on the activity and lesson. As for what I have learned, it was helpful reading about the varying teacher roles and the different categories of young learners. I am to be a teacher for younger learners, so it was helpful learning about how age groups differ in their reaction and motivation when it comes to learning English. I found it especially helpful reading about suggestions on how to be successful in each teacher role and how to make sure that one is carrying out the roles appropriately, in different situations. For example, being a participate in activities may encourage students and make the class interesting, as well as clarify instructions—however, teachers must be careful not to dominate the activity and to maintain and monitoring the rest of the class as a whole.
