This unit has helped me clear up and better understand basic points of English grammar. More so, it has helped me refine my own personal methods when teaching and learning languages.
As with science, mathematics and all other things which we use to gain knowledge, grammar does not in fact tell us what to do with the words of a language, but rather merely describes what naturally occurs when native speakers of that language communicate with one another. As such, when teaching English to non-native speakers, the focus should not be on memorising the complex structures of a language, but rather on developing a students' habit of actually speaking the language. Basic grammar, such as the parts of speech introduced in this video should be used merely to refine what comes natural to the student. This approach has greatly helped me in my own language learning.
Language skills are best improved through practical experience with a language, for example, communicating with a native speaker. This will help students to gain a natural feel for their target language, be it English or otherwise. While teachers can and should have a proper knowledge of the different parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and so on, the way in which they are learnt should be as natural as possible for the students learning them.
