Receptive and productive skills need to be balanced appropriately when teaching a class. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking all build upon one another as the student advances, and the best way to keep the students engaged is to vary the course with different topics of discussions, all the while trying to incorporate the student's interests in it. As always, the goal is to have the classroom be inviting to students to speak the target language without fear of ridicule, so always keep in mind the level of difficulty of prepared texts/assignments, and do your best to ease the students into the work.
