This unit covers 3 important aspects – Modals, Phrasal Verbs and Passive Voice. Firstly, it outlines some of the fundamental rules when we are applying modals (e.g. can, could, may, might, should & have etc) in our daily English usage. Firstly, modals are generally used to express a number of different ideas. The ideas consist of obligation, possibility/probability of an incident occurrence, permission/prohibition, ability for someone to do something, as well as advice to/from someone. In particular, from page 2 to 3, it provides a full list of modal auxiliary verbs, detailing its actual uses (or intention). The intention can range from an indication of polite request, obligation, necessity, percentage of certainty, and suggestion. Most importantly, the list gives out some useful examples on the respective present/future/past tense usage, which help the readers to understand even better. Secondly, it touches on ‘passive voice’, together with relative clauses (independent, dependent and relative), which recaps the difference between active voice and passive voice. In context of passive voice, one of the key pointers is that the agent (or the doer of the action) is much less important, and instead the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. Lastly, it illustrates 3 basic types of phrasal verbs. They are intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable. Teachers should monitor students’ learning process on phrasal verbs and try to use them naturally during uncontrolled practice/conversation.
