This unit provided two lessons of a real classroom setting to see an ESL teacher in action. Currently in my job I observe many ALTs here in Japan and provide feedback on their lessons. At times in the first lesson I was pretty shocked to see how cold and unsupportive the teacher was. In the second lesson he was much kinder and more supportive of the students. It is important to be kind and encouraging and provide visual context. In the second lesson he had a smooth transition from one activity to the next because the lesson built steadily upon itself. In the first lesson his overall rapport with the students was gruff and not helpful in the way of providing drills or feedback. It is important to remember the idea of scaffolding within a lesson to help the students become successful.
