This unit was an overview of basic English grammatical rules, including parts of speech and the different types of articles, adjectives, adverbs, nouns and so on. It discussed the rules and exceptions of nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, and prepositions/conjunctions. I feel I have learned a lot by having the opportunity to review and freshen up on grammatical rules and to remind myself of the specific grammatical terms that I may have forgotten, such as gerund or intransitive and transitive verbs. Reviewing the grammatical terms, rules, and exceptions will help me better explain these concepts to students—I can better explain why some sentences are better than others with clear grammatical reasons, rather than just saying “because it sounds better” or “it sounds right.” In particular, I learned a lot from the distinction of countable and uncountable nouns. I think this would be helpful in letting me explain when to use the terms “many, much, and a lot of”. I also learned about the main types of adverbs, which is a categorization I’ve heard of before but never studied in detail.
