Unit 16 deals with conditionals using the word "if" to establish a conditional clause followed by a main clause to express the consequence of the conditional clause. There are five main conditionals, such as: zero conditional (referring to facts that are irrefutable), 1st conditional (referring to real situation in the future that is possible), 2nd conditional (referring to hypothetical situation that is not true), 3rd conditional (referring to hypothetical past action and past consequence or result) and mixed conditional (referring to a mix of hypothetical past action and hypothetical present consequence).
Also discussed in this unit are direct speech and how they are converted into reported speech in varying tenses. Therefore, present direct speech tenses are translated into past equivalent tenses in reported speech form and past direct speech tenses are converted into past perfect tenses in reported speech form. Also, the word "will" in direct speech becomes "would" in reported speech.
