This unit reminds me that, other than teaching grammar, vocabulary is equally important towards students’ English learning process.
In particular, I learnt that “straight arrow” ESA approach is more suitable for lower level students, whereas “patchwork” and “boomerang” ESA approaches may tend to more for mid-level students as they are filled with more functions-based element.
Most importantly, I also grasped some more ideas in context of the techniques for vocabulary teaching.
Basically, they can be divided into 3 parts. First technique is “Engage” stage which aims to help students elicit the meaning of new vocabulary through having pictures, contrast and discussion. Second one is the “study” stage which includes gap-filled exercises, crossword and example sentences. The last one is “activate” stage which can involve debate, role play and story building.
