This unit is about course books and lesson materials. The teaching materials can be divided into two groups : authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are programs , magazines, songs, brochures, menus and so on. Created materials are usually designed by teachers. Common created materials are crosswords, word search puzzles, role play cards, gap fill activities, flashcards, picture stories. By the way teaching English with created or authentic materials is more interesting and funny.
Course books usually consist of the following materials : student's book , workbook, cassettes and teacher's book.
Compare with created materials, course books have advantages and disadvantages.
There are also four different options for course book use: omit (when the teacher decides to omit certain lessons from course books), replace (instead of omitting unsuitable material the teacher may choose to replace with similar, but appropriate materials), supplement (sometime the teacher might want to add extra material to the course books to reinforce the language point), adapt (when the teacher will use the same basic materials but in his/her own way .
From my point of view, I can say that teaching materials and course books play the main role of studying, especially created materials make the lessons more interesting and funny which will also motivate students to learn English.
