I learned the basic skills in language acquisition, which are primarily the productive and receptive skills that we use daily in English Conversation. To ensure a fuller development of these skills, an effective teacher should include or blend a variety of these skills in the lesson planning. In this Unit, I have gained understanding on the approaches to creating effective lessons for reading and listening. In setting learning objectives, we should think about why we want our students to read or listen to something, and what skills should they practice. We should consider the reasons and motives for doing it. Understanding a context requires some skills that we want our students to develop. For example, we want to teach our students to learn how to scan for a specific information, or skim to gain an overview of the material, make predictions, and so on. The topic of our lesson can affect the motivation of our students. As what I have also learned from the previous chapters, to engage interest or active participation in the class, we should get to know our students` interest. It is good to incorporate variety of topics as according to what really interest our students individually. This would make sure that all of our students` needs are fairly met. Students are often overwhelmed with lengthy sentences or words, and have difficulty learning a lot of new, unfamiliar words in one session. It is necessary to carefully select the type of materials we are going to use and to assess the difficulty of each vocabulary and the length of the materials with the students` ability or level of learning. It is good to provide beginner learners with few sentences. I have heard from a good teacher that selecting the materials of the lesson appropriately is only the beginning of making a successful reading or listening lesson. When I taught English before, I realized how bad my vocabulary lessons were. One of the most important thing that I also learned from this course unit is how essential pre teaching is . To avoid creating a hindrance which impedes the students` understanding of the text or listening passage, we should pre teach necessary words that they may not understand. However, we should try not to explain too much but give our students some challenge to discover it by themselves. It is better to elicit the meaning of words from our students. Moreover, to help our students to read or listen in a focused way, it is good to give our students a little bit of challenge that can be achievable. We could provide them comprehension tasks such as jigsaw reading, word order, gap-fill, true or false questions, or ask facts about what they have read or listened. For high level students, we could ask them abstract questions about their opinions, feelings or attitudes in relation to the topic material. I am really thankful to learn these things to improve my teaching.
