Receptive skills of reading and listening are important to teach because students need to be able to use context to gain understanding of words and texts beyond the literal meaning of the words and sentences. Using carefully selected texts that fit the abilities of the students is important. Using a variety of topics over time will keep the class more engaged in the lesson and exercises. Pre-teaching unknown or difficult vocabulary can be helpful, but should not be overdone because the point is to teach comprehension even if every word is not known.
