Unit twelve discusses the importance of both writing and speaking as activation skills. Creating lesson plans for both of these topics requires striking a balance between seeking accuracy and fluency from students. The study of language accuracy oftentimes requires Study activities such as drilling and prompting, whereas the study of language fluency oftentimes requires Activate activities such as free role-play and information gap. Speaking and writing also have their own unique obstacles in learning. For example, speaking may be difficult for students who are shy, lack confidence, or adhere to certain cultural rules. However, on the other hand, writing may be difficult for students because too much time is allocated to speaking in the classroom and not enough silent writing exercises are given and therefore writing is not as frequently practiced in the classroom.
