Teaching Special Groups Beginners- this term includes a few sub-categories, from absolute beginners to the ones without the roman alphabet, and each one of them; although they all share the same concept as beginners, should have a slightly different approach as their needs and attitudes are different. Individuals- teaching individuals (one-to-one) has its pros and cons vs. teaching groups, and vice versa. There is only one level, the student is usually highly motivated and the atmosphere is more relaxed but it's missing the dynamics of a classroom. No pair or group work is possible, other than the teacher, who then fills in the role of the prompter, partner, helper, etc. Young learners- they have very short attention spams, thus need lots of activities. Even if they are not as motivated as their adult counterparts, their curiosity makes up for it, just have to keep their interests. They are like little "sponges", absorbing everything around them, learning a lot faster than adult students. Teaching young learners, especially very young ones is a lot of fun! I teach a few, one-to-one, myself and it is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in my life so far. Business English- this is one area I have never had the opportunity to explore before. As it is stated in this unit, 90% of it is teaching general English, except for the terms that are used in the different fields of profession but they are rare and far in between. It is important to be professional at all times both, in appearance and in demeanor. Common problems in this group are; tiredness, mixed abilities, attendance and motivation. The typical process of teaching this group, similar to most groups, involves level test, needs analysis, group needs negotiation, planning out the syllabus, test and evaluate progress and post-course evaluation. Important to keep record! Monolingual vs. multilingual- monolingual students all have the same L1, while multilingual students have different L1s as the names imply. Teaching each of these groups have their advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of teaching monolingual students are:- common difficulties, same or very similar culture, can help each other in their L1. Disadvantages:- will try at even higher level to use their L1
