In unit thirteen, I learned a lot about English phonology that I had not previously known before. Intonation and stress are some of the more fascinating topics for me because they can fundamentally shift the meaning of a sentence so effectively. Before now, I have had very little exposure to the phonemic alphabet and the stress of syllables, even though I am an English major. I agree with the observation that phonology is often not taught because English learners themselves struggle with comprehending some concepts and because non-native speakers will likely never pronounce words exactly like native speakers. However, I believe that by first instructing teachers in pronunciation teaching techniques and theories and making time for more advanced pronunciation lessons, it becomes more likely for learners to pick up on the patterns of pronunciation and then possibly to be understood by native speakers more often.
