There are a wide variety of tests and assessments that help a teacher meet the needs of the students. Placement or diagnostic tests are often given at the beginning of a course to see what level the student is currently at academically. In addition, diagnostic tests (formative assessments) help the teacher know students' aptitude and to focus planning to take care of gaps in the students' knowledge. Progress tests can be administered at different times (i.e., end of unit, half year, end of year) to indicate areas the students are having problems with and suggest what should be reviewed. Progress tests can be formative or summative, depending on time of year and how the results are used. For higher level students, practice tests can help prepare them for external proficiency tests that can test for General English, Business English, and Academic English. Some of these external tests are used for people to obtain employment, get promoted, or gain entrance into a university.
