I find myself reading and listening, skimming and scanning all day. I buy a newspaper and a Scan to see what I want to read or I see the paper at the store and scan to see if I want to purchase. I do the same thing with magazines. You take in just what you need and don't worry about the extra. We listen to the same way. Our ears perk up if we hear something of interest. THat could be called a selective hearing.
