Pronunciation isn't often taught because teachers might feel that they don't know how to teach it. It can also be an especially socially awkward thing to teach. It is helpful to know something about the way the vocal cords, mouth and tongue work to perform different sounds so that the teacher can identify where students are weak and strong. For example, students might be skilled at plosive sounds and relatively poor at fricative sounds or vice-versa. Prononuciation can be taught on an as-needed basis, or part of a lesson can be devoted to it, or a whole lesson may be entirely on pronunciation, but it is not good to neglect it.
