It is not only expected by schools but it is important for both, teacher and student to assess and evaluate the students' level, knowledge and skills and the progress they have made or the issues and difficulties they might have with certain language points, in order to advance the students to the next level or to revisit those issues, difficulties to ensure the full absorption, comprehension of those by the students.
There are a few types of testing and evaluation tools used by teachers and institutions:
Tutorials- done individually or with a whole group.
Evaluation by the students- very useful to obtain information on how the students feel about the appropriateness of the level being taught.
Placement tests- to determine the student's current language level.
Progress tests- to help the teacher to see what knowledge the students have retained.
Diagnostic tests- usually given at the start of the course to assess the student's knowledge
Practice tests- are usually given in preparation for, and should follow the structure and the extent of, an external examination.
