Unit 8 reviewed the future tense and explained seven structures that are related to the future. One notable thing I learned was that the present continuous and the 'going to' future forms are commonly used to express the future, even though they are not one of the "standard" four tenses we learn for the future. I think this shows that language is quite fluid and that a shift in time is common in many of the tenses or forms we learn. One example of this is how the future perfect can be described as involving "the past in the future." Another example is how one function of the future continuous is to "predict the present." In each of these units on tenses, there have been some definitions of tenses that involve at least 2 different aspects of time. These rules and relations are apt to be confused by students, so I believe that having a strong understanding of the tenses involving time several different times will make me a better teacher.
