This unit focuses and examines when and how to use the course books, materials and teaching aids. There are many materials that can be used to aid teaching the lessons such as, worksheets, visual aids, video and audio aids and course books.
Course books and other teaching materials are not so readily available in many schools, so teachers often have to create their own materials. There are two types of used; authentic and created.
Authentic materials can be more interesting to some students but they are not created with teaching purposes, thus cannot be graded to the level of the students versus the created materials, which can also be used to compliment lessons from a course book, and to be tailored to the students' needs.
Course books have their pros and cons such as; less time consuming to supplement than materials made from scratch but on the other hand, the exclusive use of them can make students and teachers equally unmotivated, etc. They can and should be used as guides but never solely rely on them. All teaching materials and aides, including course books, should be used to create a balanced lesson.
