Teaching English requires being familiar with knowing how to teach some special groups. These include Beginners, Individuals (one-to-one), Young Learners, Business English (and other specific purpose), and Monolingual vs. Multilingual. There are several categories of Beginners but all need activities to get them talking and keep them talking. Visual aids, games, simple teaching language, patience, frequent praise, pair work, and interactive games will all benefit Beginners. Individuals or One-to-one students require a different teaching approach than group lessons. It is important to do a needs analysis to determine their needs and interests. Teachers must vary the activities as well as their teaching approach. Teachers have to be an active participant in any pair work. Young Learners present a special problem in that they have short attention spans so lots of activities must be planned. Like beginners, they require teachers to speak slowly and clearly, benefit from visual aids, and need to be praised frequently. Teachers should include gesture, mime, and play interactive, communicative games as often as possible. Teachers should be comfortable making fun of themselves and showing a "silly" side. Business English students come in three categories: individuals, groups from a company that come to your school, or a group that is taught at the company. some common problems are attendance, motivation, and tiredness after a long work day. Because the groups are usually selected or sent by the company, mixed ability classes are common. Business English students typically take a leveled test and fill out a needs analysis. Based on this information, the teacher leads the class/group through a group need negotiation and then plans out the syllabus. Later he/she will test to evaluate progress. It is not uncommon for the company to require a written report from the teacher at the end of the course. The last category is Monolingual vs. Multilingual. Monolingual refers to a group of students who all share the same first language (L1). Multilingual students have different L1s. Advantages of teaching a Monolingual class is they share common difficulties with learning English, have a similar cultural background, and can sometimes help each other in their native language. However, sometimes they try to use L1 instead of the target language and may have less exposure to English. Multilingual students come from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and have a variety of difficulties learning English. However, because English is the language common to all, they tend to use it more in class. They also have a variety of experiences which the teacher can use to make lessons more interesting and relevant. Living in and English-speaking country, they also have more natural exposure to English through television, radio, newspapers, and everyday life.
