This unit focused on the importance of teaching the productive language skills, speaking and writing. It explained the distinctions in approaches that teachers must use when focusing on these language skills compared to the receptive language skills. In particular, it outlined the difference between seeking accuracy in communication versus fluency in communication. Because both are ultimately critical to a general understanding of the English language it is important to balance them as students progress.
