In my past experience the main issue I found was not that to get the class of new groups to establish rapport but the different levels issue. I made it mainly by eavenly grouping the students by level (avoiding too large gaps); my students appreciated the fact that they were not getting pressure to speak and that I left the upper intermediates train the lower levels gradually. Not correcting them in the beginning builds up their confidence and after a few warm up lessons even reluctant students are inspired and want to participate. I really appreciated my lessons in EFL and feel more confident In my ability. The only thing I couldn't understand is that although you said that each teacher can organize his Boomerang or patchwork lessons as they prefer, in the testing it wasn't so and the answers are fixed by the test itself with no variant... ugh... this decreased my target score! It's a pity.
