I do not teach grammar as a subject, but need to refer to it in all my reading, writing and speaking lessons. I teach kindergarten and beginners English, and am always introducing and practicing new vocabulary and grammatical structures. I personally need to understand something before I can truly commit it to memory, and it is difficult enough for students to remember something new, but easier when you understand it and where it fits into your life. The fact that we need to ensure understanding of meaning, usage, form and how it is written/spoken, we ensure a more solid foundation on which to build the new knowledge. I also believe it makes the learning process less stressful for the student.
