Unity 18 covered three different topics which were modals, phrasal verbs and passive voices. Modals are used before verbs to add meaning to them. We use modals when talking about advice, permission, obligation, possibility and ability. When thinking about teaching modals, one needs to remember that most modals have several uses. For example, the modal ‘might’ can be used as a polite request or the probability of something.
The unit then moved on to cover passive speech and how to teach it in to non-native speakers. Once again, the issue of explaining the use of passive speech to students is problematic. It is not enough to know the rules – using it appropriately and correctly outside the classroom requires considerable fluency and practice.
The end of the unit dealt with phrasal verbs. I felt that this part of the unit was rushed and should have been covered in more detail as it is a difficult topic to teach non-native speakers. Just quickly going over the different types of phrasal verbs is not sufficient for covering the topic.
