A modal verb, placed before a verb in its base form, contributes to the meaning of the verb phrase functioning as the predicate of a sentence by implying necessity, obligation, ability, permission, or certainty or lack thereof. A relative clause is a dependent clause which describes a noun; it may or may not be introduced by a relative pronoun referring to a noun in the main (independent) clause of a compound sentence. If a relative clause is not preceded and followed by commas, it is a defining relative clause and is necessary for identifying the noun; if a relative clause is marked by commas before and after, it is a non-defining relative clause, adding information about the noun but not necessary for identifying it. A phrasal verb is a verb followed by one or two particles; a particle is a preposition or adverb used after a verb to modify its meaning or syntactical function (as changing an intransitive verb to a transitive one). There are intransitive phrasal verbs with one following particle, separable transitive phrasal verbs whose object can come after the verb and before the particle, and inseparable transitive phrasal verbs that can have one or two particles that cannot come after the object but must immediately follow the verb.
