This unit helped to give some validation and further support to my lesson planning efforts. I often team teach, and I've been wondering about the proper amount of planning, conversing, and flexibility. I work at seven different schools on rotation. Even though every school follows the same curriculum, we often have to mix up the pacing because of how differently each school performs. This is a major problem at the elementary schools -- or rather, it's not a problem but a simple fact.
Moving forwards, I'm very concerned about checking-in with individual students. Sometimes it's very clear that certain students are struggling, but when I tried to privately check-in with one student last week the atmosphere became a little tense with her. A parent had mentioned before that her daughter only copied other students in class, and didn't truly understand English. I'm concerned about this issue moving forward, but I also don't want to make the students uncomfortable... even though I feel as though I want them to push themselves more, I think there's a bit of culture clash in this regard.
