This unit takes a close look at teaching special groups. It covers techniques and activities that can be used when teaching specific groups such as beginners, young learners and business students.
In my teaching career, I have taught different kinds of groups in a classroom setting from young learners to adults and from a multilingual to monolingual class. Aside from teaching in groups, I have also taught one-to-one lessons to individuals in a home setting. As a teacher, I had to adapt my teaching approach to different groups of students according to their varying needs and motivation in learning the English language.
This unit provided me more with clear ideas in using different style and approach to adopt when teaching individual students compared to large groups, young learners compared to adults and multilingual classes compared to monolingual classes. It is an addition to my knowledge to also learn about how to approach another specific group which is business English learners, due to the fact that I haven’t had any teaching experience with this kind of group. This unit has walked me through some things to consider before, during and after teaching a course to such kind of group such as getting to know the clients and their wants and needs, planning a program for them, and evaluating their progress.
