In this unit, I’ve learnt about the necessity of evaluating and testing student’s level of learning. There are various forms of tests and evaluations, such as placement/diagnostic test that are done first, to assess the student’s level and place them in the right difficulty classes. There are also progress tests which ensure that students are absorbing the materials adequately and are retaining the information. Most students that study English as a second language will want to take an external test, run by organisations such as Cambridge etc., to achieve the qualification/proof that they are capable of the tested level of English which will help them get into education and/or jobs. In summary there are various tests for different purposes. Each test applies different format to test for different aspects of language ability. Overall, tests and evaluations are another mean of communication to ensure that the optimal learning opportunities provided by teachers, are being used effectively by students.
