In this unit, we examined two ESA demonstration videos that show contrasting ways of teaching by the teacher and reactions by the students. One lesson presents a teacher who seems unconcerned about his students’ learning. The other lesson presents a more effective teacher who was more engaging and well-prepared.
Between the two videos, I would rather be on the second lesson. I found the teacher was more successful in delivering the lesson by having a well-structured and student-centered lesson plan with clear instructions and helpful activities, and by being enthusiastic and motivating all throughout the class time. The teacher also employed different roles during the class like being an organizer, monitor, and prompter.
On the other hand, the teacher in lesson one would have made me feel uninterested in participating in the class. He gave a negative aura all throughout the lesson which makes it difficult to be attentive to what he is teaching.
Ultimately, the lesson I learned from this unit is that every teacher is different and this difference in teaching style, the teacher’s attitude, and the teacher’s delivery of the lesson greatly affects student learning and outcome. An ineffective teacher could make students lose interest in the lessons and consequently drops their motivation to learn. In contrast, an effective teacher cares about the students’ learning, and therefore produces more successful students.
