This unit discussed the importance of teaching receptive skills to your students. Receptive skills, reading and listening, are equally as important as productive skills, speaking and writing, but are often harder to teach. I learned a number of things within this unit, but mostly that teachers need to be very careful with choosing the texts they assign their students to read. There are a number of things you have to balance – making sure the topic is something that will engage students, making sure you pre-teach any tough vocabulary within the text, and making sure that the text is understandable with minimal pre-teaching. This unit made me excited to teach receptive skills to my students, because the activities provide lots of opportunities to introduce students to American things such as American movies, sports, food, etc., as it should be fairly easy to find texts/videos addressing these aspects of American culture.
