I learned that students have to be exposed to the new language they’re learning, understand its meaning, understand how it is constructed, and be able to practice and produce it. Learning vocabulary is subject to the similarity of English words to the students’ own language, the similarity to English words already known, spelling and pronunciation, and appropriateness. When it comes to selecting language, the teacher should consider appropriateness to the students and task, frequency and coverage, and teachability. When introducing a new words, students need to learn the meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation. When teaching grammatical structures, students will need to know what the language means, how it is used, what the grammatical form is, and how it is said/written. Language has a function. Language function includes areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, and disagreeing, suggesting, etc. It also includes the appropriateness of the language in terms of usage: formal, informal, tentative, technical, etc.
