Unit 14: Course books
I’ve had the pleasure to spend almost 10 years in foreign language classrooms and I’ve also had the pleasure and misfortune as to have some amazing teacher / textbook combinations and some not so great. This Unit hit the nail on the head about how to pick a course text, as well as how to make useful Authentic (newspapers, books, tv) and non-authentic (material in target language made for students) lessons for students. I’ve had teachers who have taught a text book to a tee and haven’t explored and the class has been very drawn out and boring. On the other hand, I’ve had teachers who’ve decided a textbook wouldn’t be the best for our class and made our own syllabus for the students in the class. After this lesson, I strive to create a classroom that engages my students, but has a course text backbone that will enable my students to see progress as well as having fun.
