I learned that students will only participate in a speaking activity eagerly if there or one of the following factors present in it: communicative purpose, they want to say something, they want to listen to something, or they are interested in what is being said. There is a difference between accuracy and fluency. Accuracy is concentrated on producing correct language. Fluency is concentrated on allowing the students to experiment and have fun with the language. Speaking activities can be divided into different categories: controlled activities, guided activities, and communicative communication. Controlled is accuracy focused and communicative communication is fluency based, guided being somewhere in the middle. Students can be reluctant to speak in class because they have a lack of confidence, they fear to make mistakes, peer intimidation, lack of interest, previous learning experiences, or cultural reasons. Pairwork and groupwork is usually an effective method to incorporate to encourage interaction. Other techniques are also beneficial, like plenty of controlled and guided activities before fluency based activities, purposeful speaking tasks, and careful planning. Neat handwriting should always be encouraged because if a student writes particularly illegibly it can influence the reader negatively. Encouraging spelling is essential because making a lot of spelling mistakes can lead to the presumption of a lack of education. Punctuation can prove tricky for students because their native language might have no punctuation at all. It is important to know that a game in class is an activity with rules, a goal, and an element of fun. There are competitive games and cooperative games. The one is where a team races against another and the other is where teams work towards a common goal. Games can provide useful controlled practice and free practice material.
