Grammar –
• Conditionals – if/when
• Two clauses – main clause and sub clause
• Zero Conditional = if/when + present tense, present tense … refer to irrefutable consequences and actions.
• First conditional = if + present simple, will … refers to a real situation that could happen.
• Second conditional = if + past simple, would/could/might + base form
• Third conditional = if + past perfect, would/could/might/ + have + past participle
• Mixed conditional = if + past perfect, would + base form
This area of grammar has many irregularities and peculiarities. This can be quite difficult.
Reported speech
• There are never quotation marks when reporting speech. Often the verb tense changes and also the participle.
• “I love it.” He said – becomes He said he loved it.
• The tense changes when reporting direct speech and this is referred to as backshifting.
• Time expressions also change when using reported speech.
• The potential for mistakes is enormous so take it slowly and thoroughly when teaching.
