The future tense is more complex in English than in other languages. There are seven forms that English speakers can use to speak about the future. 1. The future simple is the most basic form that includes a subject, the word will, and a verb. This can be taught with a fortune-telling exercise. 2. The future continuous includes a subject, the word will, the auxiliary verb to be, and a verb plus -ing. This tense can be taught with asking the students how to politely decline future events (like a date from hell). 3. The future perfect tense includes a subject, the word will, the word have, and a past participle. 4. The future perfect continuous includes a subject, the word will, the auxiliary verb have and been, and a verb plus -ing. There are a lot of parts to this tense, and it is not often used. 5. The "be going" tense includes a subject, the conjugated verb to be, the word going, and the infinitive form of a verb. It is used to talk about decisions that have already been made at the time of speaking, and future plans like vacations. You can also use the present simple and present continuous tenses to talk about the future. 6. The present simple can be used to talk about what time a store opens, or the schedule of the trains. For example, "The train leaves the station in five minutes". The sentence is talking about the future, but did not use the future tense word 'will'.
