Course books and lesson materials can be highly personalised or standardised and generic. Many teachers favour course books for their reliability and content coverage while others prefer authentic, relevant and personalised resources. There are pros and cons for each. Authentic materials are often more real and relevant, more interesting and motivating and can be designed for the particular interests of each student or group of students. However they are often not levelled and this can be problematical. Course books can provide a tried and tested syllabus however should be used with caution and adapted where possible to suit the group a particular group of students. Course book material can be supplemented to add interest, motivation and relevancy.
