Lessons plans should be well organized, but allow flexibility. A lesson plan is not a rigid plan that cannot be changed, but an outline of what the teacher hopes to accomplish in the class. It is a tool that helps keep the classroom organized,a tool to help the teacher outline what should be done for the class, and a record of what has already been studied. These plans do not need to be too specific. For example, it is not helpful to write out an exact dialogue of everything that is going to be said by the teacher in the classroom. The lesson plan should be more flexible than that. The lesson plan can outline the specifics of the ESA models that can be used to teach. A teacher can use the straight arrow method, boomerang method, or patchwork method of ESA to structure the class. Personally, I have learned that making a lesson plan is a lot more difficult than it sounds. I might have a perfect lesson plan in my head, but when I write it down, I might realize some potential problems with that specific plan. I might realize, for instance, that the lesson might take too long, or that the students might not have a good enough foundation in the vocabulary in order to accomplish the activate phase without first including a study activity on that vocabulary to strengthen their foundation. It is very helpful for planning purposes to physically write out a lesson plan.
