In this unit, I’ve learnt that reading and writing are ‘receptive’ skills, which should be taught with thought and care to suit the students. The fact that we categorise our reading and listening was something I’ve not thought of before. Various skills such as predictive, scanning, skimming etc., are used to aid reading and listening. To help improve those skills in our students, teachers need to choose appropriate level of context that entices the students. Various topics should be chosen to try and accommodate all students, and teachers should focus on what the students already know instead of what they don’t. To optimise learning from the chosen text, teachers should pre-teach vocabularies that might be too difficult for the students.
