Lesson 11 covers the receptive skills used when disseminating information based on the needs of the reader / listener. I learned how to think differently about the information based on the cultural background of the recipient. The example in the lesson uses American football in how Americans will likely comprehend the headline ‘Bears destroyed by Cowboys’ differently than a non-native speaker who might comprehend the sentence verbatim. This lead into the importance of pre-teaching vocabulary and bringing to attention language that may seem confusing without prior explanation or context. Overall this lesson helped put in perspective the importance of keeping cultural nuances in mind when creating a lesson plan. Not to say that potentially confusing topics should be avoided but rather with proper planning and pre-contextual explanation the lesson can be more rewarding.
