I learned about how to maintain a balance between the teacher directing the class and allowing students to express themselves, interact with one another and grow in self-reliance. Before having read this unit, I didn't realize how different seating arrangements and groupings of students can change the classroom dynamic, promote rapport and enhance learning. I was also very interested to learn the principle that asking a question with the name of the student whom you wish to respond expressed last would keep all students on their toes and ready to respond. I also didn't know things like the fact that seating can be carefully arranged so that students who dislike one another are kept apart and that the same principle can be applied to arranging pairs. I also learned that group work can allow for some students to dominate and that this, too, can be carefully monitored and that the teacher can put particular students together in ways that may reduce this possibility. I also learned that classroom rapport can be purposefully built and that my instinct that it's preferable to discuss a student's problem behavior with him or her one-on-one rather than in front of the entire class is correct.
