Grammar is a very complex subject and though the English language does have very specific rules, there are many exceptions. These must be learnt by students if they are to become fluent. Every word in every sentence has a specific function in conveying the meaning and they can all be categorised according to this function, within the structure of the sentence. I learnt that as a native English speaker, much of this knowledge is subconscious and is applied automatically.
