Grammar and vocabulary are both important aspects of teaching a new language. When compared to a tree, grammar is like the tree trunk, and vocabulary is like the leaves. The leaves add beauty and variety, but are nothing without the trunk to hold them together. There is a pretty universally accepted pattern for what grammar principles to teach when, but there is not as clear of a pattern when it comes to teaching vocabulary. When it comes to grammar, the students need to understand the usage, patterns, and meanings. When it comes to vocabulary, students need to understand their meanings, interactions with other words, pronunciation, and spelling. When selecting vocabulary to teach, one must consider the teachability of the word, how common it is used, and how appropriate the word is to the student's situations.
