Learning a new language can be difficult. For a teacher, there needs to be a balance between teaching grammar and teaching new vocabulary. It is good to remember that the grammar is like the trunk of a tree, and the vocabulary is like the leaves. This means that although learning new vocabulary is fun, the students cannot use the new words without knowing where they go in a sentence and how they are used (grammar). Teachers should choose vocabulary based on teachability, appropriacy to students and tasks, and frequency of usage. Teaching new vocab can be done with pictures, mime and action, discovery, or discussion. The new vocabulary can be studied using worksheets like crosswords. The new vocabulary can be activated by open discussion, role-play, or material products tasks.
