Similar like grammar, tenses can be quite intimidating even to a native speaker especially when it comes to the theory part. It is not to say that the native speaker is not well versed with it, just that, because the native speaker is so in tuned with how the language works, it does not occur to her that her particular sentence falls under any specific tense system. To the native speaker, it just feels right to speak as it is. However to someone learning the language, going through this theory part can be confusing and might be even be a put off factor. I know this for a fact as a young student during my younger days, I used to be very confused and irritated when my teacher presented this topic in class. To me, it didn't really matter what the sentence structure is called as long as it sounded fine and I got my message across.
I strongly agree that to learn a language, sometimes, it is much more easier to just forget the theory and rules part and just start speaking with proficient language speakers until mastery level is achieved.
