This unit discusses the forms and usages of the five conditionals. In addition, it looks at the subject of reported speech and direct speech and shows the contrasts between the two. It also exemplified activities for teaching them in the activate stage of a lesson in an English language classroom. The topic about conditionals is a complex aspect of the English grammar, but this unit provided detailed explanations which revised my knowledge of the types of conditional sentences and their structure. Conditionals are basically sentences containing “if” which refer to past, present and future possibilities. A conditional sentence contains an “if” clause (the condition) and a main clause (the consequence), and either can come in the first part of a conditional sentence. There are five types of conditional sentences. I was used to the three common types namely: first, second and third conditionals, because these three are the usual subject mentioned in most books. This unit, however, gave me a better understanding of the other two, the zero and mixed conditionals. The other part of the unit tackles direct and indirect speech. Direct speech is the actual speech while indirect speech is the reported speech. When we convert speech from direct to indirect or vise versa, we need to make some changes in some parts of the actual speech like the tense, the pronoun and even the time expressions. Teaching this aspect of grammar can be a source of confusion for the students. The teaching ideas mentioned in this unit are really useful to cater this problem. With constant practice, I’m sure the students will build confidence in applying the language use of conditionals and reported speech.
