I really enjoyed this unit! I took a linguistics course before and it was fun to revisit that material, now in a much less technical way, and in a way that seems much more applicable to my future position as a teacher. Especially when the last several units have been quite "theory" heavy, without some practical material to really sink my teeth into. Initially, when the unit started delving deep into phonology, with the phonemic alphabet and alveolar fricatives, I thought it was somewhat a waste of time -- I didn't see when I would teach students that material and because I had studied the material before, I was quite frankly bored with it. However, I realized that not everything a teacher knows needs to be taught directly to students -- I should know the different phonemes to be able to help students produce them when they're having difficulties, but they don't need to know exact terms like "dental" or "approximant" to be able to be taught. This was such a meaty lesson, coincidentally one that catered to my interests, and I greatly enjoyed the breath of fresh air!
