Most mistakes within the past perfect continuous form are that many students forget to include the two verbs 'had' and 'been.' Confusion can arise between this form and the past continuous. The difference is that the past continuous form implies that an action had occurred around a general time period while the former shows the action is happening up until the time of discussion. In fact, the past continuous is used to demonstrate interrupted past actions, to express an action that began before a time period and probably continued after that time period, to indicate a development that took place in the past, and to describe situations. This form contrasts with the past simple as the past simple is used with precise actions and time periods in the past.
