Selecting vocabulary is integral to a positive teaching outcome. Choosing vocabulary depends on its frequency and coverage, appropriacy to the task and students, and its teachability. Students also need to know the meaning, spelling, pronunciation, and use of the word as well as how it is used in sentences and how it interacts with other words. 'Straight arrow' type lessons are usually associated with vocabulary and grammar. Patchwork lessons (lessons that begin with Engage and end with Activate, with as many Engage, Study, and Active segments in between) are typically used for intermediate classes lasting longer than half an hour.
